The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today. That’s why Liverpool worked hard this year to secure the commitment of their star players, Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in signing new deals and remaining at the club for the foreseeable future. The direction in which the club is heading is to seize every opportunity today, to prepare for their future.
Mané, who moved to Anfield from Southampton in 2016 for £34m, was in negotiations with Liverpool over a new deal since the end of last season. He has now agreed terms with the club on what is understood to be a five-year deal, lasting until 2023 worth around £150,000 a week. It is a justified reward for the 26-year-old, who has scored more than 40 goals from 90 appearances. He was voted as the club’s Player of the Year following his debut season.
Just like Mané, over a year after Mo Salah initially arrived at Merseyside from AS Roma, Liverpool has also tied him down to a longterm contract. Mo Salah’s decision to a sign a new long-term contract few months ago was an indication of how Liverpool is planning for tomorrow.
Earlier this year, another Liverpool striker, Roberto Firmino, gave the club another perfect start to tomorrow by agreeing a five-year deal at Liverpool. Firmino signed a contract worth about £9 million a year, making him one of Liverpool’s highest-paid players. The deal, paying £180,000 a week, retains Firmino until the summer of 2023. Most importantly, Liverpool’s strategy is to get their star players to commit their peak years to Anfield.
If you wait until tomorrow to take care of tomorrow, you are simply procrastinating because tomorrow starts today. Proverbs 3:28 puts it this way “Do not say to your neighbour, ‘Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it’ – when you have it with you.” This is the ultimate procrastinator. If you have the ability to kick-start something today, why wait until tomorrow? Just like Pharaoh, who kept promising Moses that he would let Israel go, only tomorrow.
A procrastinator would think tomorrow is the perfect day to do something they are supposed to do today, since tomorrow doesn’t come, and when tomorrow comes, it’s already today and the next day will then become the new tomorrow. Don’t leave things until tomorrow, if you can get them done today.
Whilst many football clubs wait until the end of the current contract of their players before they renegotiate a new contract, Liverpool simply identifies the players who are important and renegotiate their contracts while the current terms are still running.
Tomorrow is not promised
Eminem, the musician said, “the truth is you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed.” If you keep waiting for tomorrow to get things done, tomorrow is not guaranteed, all you have is today.
That’s why you should say, “God willing” or “by the grace of God,” if you are planning to do something tomorrow, because tomorrow is never promised. Proverbs 27:1 says, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”
Some football clubs have left it too late to secure their star players. As a result they lost them, with a lot of pain and regret. Arsenal regrets not tying down Alexis Sanchez’s contract, because they left it to tomorrow. Liverpool probably learnt from their past mistakes of not tying Luis Suárez down. Although, in 2012, they promised to keep him at Liverpool “for a very long time” after signing a contract extension worth £40 million. But, when Barcelona offered £75m for the striker, Liverpool decided to forget about tomorrow and they let him go. Now Liverpool cannot even get him back for a quadruple figure of their original sale price to Barcelona.
If you were planning to do something in 2019, start today. Don’t wait until 31st December 2018 and then go into some frenzy prayers for the new year. Why? Because, 2019 actually starts today.
