A church pastor in South Carolina, USA has denied Holy Communion to presidential candidate Joe Biden because of the candidate’s support for legal abortion.
Reverend Father Robert Morey, the pastor of St. Anthony Catholic Church in the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina, denied Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden Holy Communion at a Sunday church service for his support of legal abortion.
In a statement sent by the pastor on 28 October, Morey said, “Sadly, this past Sunday, I had to refuse Holy Communion to former Vice President Joe Biden.”
“Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other and the Church. Our actions should reflect that. Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching,” the pastor added.
“As a priest, it is my responsibility to minister to those souls entrusted to my care, and I must do so even in the most difficult situations,” Morey said.
“I will keep Mr Biden in my prayers,” Morey’s statement concluded.
