By Professor Chris Imafidon
As Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II achieves the twin milestone of being 90 and also the longest reigning monarch ever, it is very useful to understand the secret of her success. In this special piece, Professor Chris Imafidon, whose family was given front row seats during the Queen’s private 90th birthday Thanksgiving service held inside Windsor Castle, reveals the secret of the current Monarch’s success as her personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and he concludes that HM the Queen’s faith sustains her through the tough times. The Queen has the right combination of desiring wisdom, prayer, and knowing Jesus as a healer and anchor.
Start with prayers
The hidden truth of the success of Queen Elizabeth II is her clear understanding of the bible and the application of God’s words. She takes her faith so seriously that six months before her coronation, she asked Britain and the Commonwealth to “pray that God may give me WISDOM and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making and that I may faithfully serve HIM… ALL the days of my life”
This echoes the prayer of King Solomon in the book of Kings. Then in the weeks leading up to her accession to the throne, she used a small book of devotional reading comprised of five weeks of bible reading and prayers! She is more than a figurehead of the Church of England. She is a practicing Christian indeed.
From her very first Christmas message in 1952, the Queen Elizabeth repeated her request for prayers. She said: “I asked the people of the Commonwealth and the Empire to pray for me as I prepare to dedicate myself. I have been and remain very grateful to you for your prayers and to God for His steadfast love. I have indeed seen his faithfulness”
Jesus is the anchor and healer
In 2002, during her Christmas message, she gave away another secret, saying “I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide me through the good and the bad. Each day is a new beginning…. And I put my trust in God. I draw strength from the message of hope in the Christian gospel” echoing the word of King David in the book of Psalms.
This was repeated in her 2014 Christmas message, in which she described Jesus as the anchor. “For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate today, is an inspiration and an ANCHOR in my life. A role model of reconciliation and forgiveness, he stretched his hands in love, acceptance, and healing.”
Here, the Queen states clearly who Jesus is to her. If Jesus is her healer then, it is evident that diseases have been defeated and ill-health has no power. If you have health, you have longevity!
The Bible is her true companion
There are three important symbols of the royal coronation. They include 1) The Orb, representing the earth and the cross at the top, 2) The Sceptres – two long decorated rods with a cross and dove and, 3) The Bible – the word of God for all ages. Despite the millions of pounds worth of jewels, Queen Elizabeth was holding the Bible – the most valuable thing in the world. She has stuck to the word not just for its symbolic power, but as a true believer. It is in obedience to the Bible that she is still patron to over 600 different charities and organisations helping the needy and less privileged.
This year, at 90, HM the Queen repeated her belief. In dealing with the future, as she embarks on her 91st year, HM Queen Elizabeth reiterates her total dependence on God alone. In her words this year, quoting Minnie Louise Haskins’ famous poem: “I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year, give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown. He replied “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
Modesty vs majesty
If you interact with HM very closely and frequently, it is easy to see a very modest and inspirational person. Most people erroneously think she is “HER MAJESTY’’ -that means she is arrogant or likes to be worshipped. I once thought that way until she visited my university on the 16th February in 2007. When I met her face-to-face, I was surprised how she made everyone feel so much at ease and that their work was important. She is so modest, that the “HM,” should really be HER MODESTY! So when the media company ITV invited me to join the Prime Minister and President Obama and other world leaders to comment on her relevance and what the monarchy means to me, I was glad. Sadly they edited out the essence of my message when it was broadcast.
Lastly, most people have forgotten that the Monarchy is a missionary family. Their commitment to evangelism is easily forgotten, because tabloid newspapers don’t sell if they write about serious issues of faith. How would the world have looked if King James had not embarked on one of the biggest evangelistic ventures ever? He translated the entire Bible so that we all could have access to The Word for ourselves. Until this exercise, only a very select few who could read Latin were able to directly access the Holy Scriptures.
